Beat This is awesome Nederbeat from the masters of 60s inspired
sounds The Waistcoats. With some of the tunes dished up by Liam at Toe
Rag, you know youre gonna get some authentic wild sounds. Beat This
has an abundance of rocking mod guitar, Beatles-esque melodies and
folky harmonies made with a real enthusiasm to create catchy tunes.
The 10" vinyl album kicks off with It's Not True a full on mod
power pop art nugget that steams along like a mad beast. As one would
expect from The Waistcoats, the song is super tuneful and digs right
into your ears. Like a The Whos mid 60s freak out Its Not True is
full of ace riffs, copulating chords and bleeding bass. Theme From
W.A.I.S.T.C.O.A.T is a sweet instrumental with mod organ and choppy
guitars. It reminds me of The Small Faces instros, so you know that
this groove is gonna get your feet moving and your hips swaying, this
is mod. Day After Day is a melancholy Nederbeat/Merseybeat tune like
The Searchers whisked up with The Zombies. This is a fine pop gem full
of melody. Shape Of You features more fine organ grinding on this
psyche pop tune. Gonna Tell That Girl has the ghost of the early
Beatles helping turn this tune into another sugar shaking gem. Ace
candy stick vocals and candy floss harmonies construct another nugget.
Everything Falls Down is another Pop Art blast creating a wild
rocknroll racket. This is a driving, plunging, rampant mad daddy of a
tune. Forever Mine is a cool slice melodic garage pop. Minor chords
and a cool guitar solo collude to make great listening Summer Breeze
with its groovy organ and chomping guitars generates an upbeat romp.
The sun is shining and smiles abound, this is a perfect cinematic
instro for bright sunny days. Liam at Toe Rag helps get the vibes
perfect, a cool mod instro. Its Too Late is a rampant R&B garage
punker with chunky riffs and a raucous vocals ripping it up,
rocknroll ladies and gents. Voice In The Wind finishes off the
album with psyche pop awash with harmonies and soft focus vocals. 'Beat
This' a great album filled with many shades and textures. Check out The
Waistcoats because they are great. Jonny Magus.
